Hello Friends and Happy Holidays! And now…for a song about death… Above is a music video I just shot down in the Big Easy for my song “Die In New Orleans,” which is on my upcoming release, “Fleur De Lis.” … Continue reading
Good vibes abound! Slowly but surely (and in ways unexpected), we are making our way toward reaching the goal of 18K for “Fleur De Lis!â€
When I first began this effort, admittedly I did so with some fears in terms of how strong the response would be, not to mention a bit of befuddlement by the general state of affairs in the music business.
HOWEVER!! This has turned out to be THE most enriching experience as well as having introduced some new people into my life I had only known transiently in the past.
One of those people is Rick Kaplan. Rick is the one creating the various studio vignettes I’ve been sending out here. The above video was found by surprise in my email on Friday and it really made me laugh so I’m sharing it with you.
Regrettably, I had to decline Rick’s initial offer to come to New Orleans to film the basic tracking. I had limited time and I didn’t feel as though I knew the musicians there well enough to impose a film crew on them and also, I didn’t know Rick at all. We finally met in Nashville and he filmed producer Brad Jones and I doing some overdubs and mixing. And now – dang it – I wish I’d had him in New Orleans! Hindsight is always 20/20 right?
Also, a few of you have stepped forward to help organize fund-raising house concerts for me. Jim Goodman organized one in Philadelphia last weekend and now I’m up to $8K in funds raised. Thank you Jim Goodman!!!
There are two more coming up soon in Delaware Annapolis, Maryland. Details below. There will also be one in NYC sometime this summer and maybe even in Kentucky!
If anyone else wants to discuss this possibility with me and help me kick this ball all the way through the goalposts, PLEASE reach out at RichardJulian2@AOL.com.
And most importantly, if you’d like to pre-order the record now, I will send you some new music to download right away, including a sneak-preview of one of the tracks from “Fleur De Lis.” Click here to find out how you can contribute.
Cheers for now!

I hope summer is treating you well!
I am pleased to report that “Fleur De Lis” is mixed! These. Tracks. Came. Out. Groovy!! I am really over the moon and can’t wait to tour and incorporate these sounds into the live performance. Some of the music is just plain joyful.
The next step from here is mastering and then on to artwork and manufacturing. We are just under 7K in fundraising (which is AMAZING), but naturally I have outspent all of that as a project with a personnel of this size requires a lot of time and budget to pull off. I can still use your help!
If you’re inclined to donate, now is the moment! I am extending the offer of a sneak preview of one of the tracks as well as two free downloads of previously unreleased material. Please scroll to the bottom of this blog to learn how to be a part!
A few people have really come through in the clutch by organizing house concerts specifically designed to raise funds for the record. I’m doing one in Philadelphia this Saturday, and three in NYC, Annapolis, and Delaware (my home state) next month. Please write me at RichardJulian2@AOL.com for details on attending or organizing a house concert. Another one or two of these, and I’m confident I can reach my goal of 18K.
I am so thankful and inspired by your attention and generosity. THANK YOU!!!
PS. My Italian, by the way, has gotten WAY better than in the video above. Thanks to Rick Kaplan (I guess) for capturing this moment.
Hello all! And thank you!
Thanks to your enthusiasm, I have managed to raise $3650 so far to make Fleur De Lis and have even begun recording! I am pleased to report that so far it is exceeding what were already my high expectations. It’s great to be working with producer Brad Jones again. And we have been blessed with a great New Orleans lineup to boot, which includes Jon Cleary, Johnny Vidacovich, and Terence Higgins. These sounds are bringing some freshness into my world and I couldn’t be more juiced. I still need need to raise another 14.5K to reach my goal as it’s an intensive project which involves a good number of horn players and studio time to get right. If you’re considering a pledge, now is a GREAT time.
The video above was taken by Jason Jurzak who played some sousaphone for us this week. It captures a moment of teaching a new song, “Gypsy Lover”, to Johnny Vidacovich, a revered New Orleans drummer. Johnny has quite a track record including playing and recording with James Booker, not to mention teaching Brian Blade. Whoa!!!
As you’ll see, I’m playing a good deal of piano on this record. For this song, I’m using the lush-sounding seven foot grand they had on tap at the studio. However, for the other tunes, I hauled my Wurlitzer spinet out there to get that funkier clunkier sound I’ve grown too attached to leave behind!
Again, thanks loads for paying attention out there. I hope you will be as pleased with the results as I am so far.
